1.1 The purpose of this Policy is to -
a) provide a healthy and safe working and learning environment as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Act; and
b) contribute to maintaining a University culture of respect, integrity and inclusivity.
2.1 The University of Western Australia strives to provide a healthy and safe working and learning environment. This is not just a moral and legal responsibility but also a prerequisite for it to achieve its primary mission to teach, conduct research and promote scholarship at the highest international standards through the attraction and retention of high quality staff, students and other working partners. This commitment to protecting people and property also extends to ensuring the University's operations do not place the community at risk of injury, illness or property damage.
3.1 Institutional Scope
a) This policy applies to the entire University.
3.2 Individual Scope
a) This policy applies to all members of the University Community who carry out tasks and activities under the auspices of the University of Western Australia including those conducted off-campus.
4.1 The University of Western Australia, its Senate, Senior Management and other Officers are committed to the University's safety management system and accountable for ensuring a safe, supportive, protective and healthy working and learning environment. This will be achieved to the highest standards by ensuring that health and safety management is a key priority in all areas of planning, resourcing, implementation, measurement and review within our places of work.
All persons are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety at work and ensure that their own acts and omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other people at work. They must also comply with any reasonable instruction including work health and safety policies, procedures and other directives and report all hazards, incidents and injuries.
5.1 The University will ensure compliance with legislation, industry standards and best practices by:
a) providing and maintaining safe workplaces, plant and systems of work;
b) adopting a risk management approach which is consistent with the nature of tasks and activities;
c) providing information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure safe systems of work;
d) ensuring that nominated safety personnel are adequately trained and supported;
e) consulting and cooperating with health and safety representatives, workers and others;
f) providing and maintaining personal protective equipment as required; and
g) continuously reviewing and improving its management system, plans and programs.
6.1 Failure to comply with this policy by a member of the University Community may be considered a breach of the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct and may result in disciplinary action.
Risk Management is the process of identification of hazards, estimation of related risk of injury or illness and implementation of mitigating control measures.
University Community means all individuals who use University Property for study, work, recreation, other activities and the performance of official duties for the University.
University Property means tangible and non-tangible things, belonging to, or contracted to the University or members of the University Community, including campuses, facilities and services.
University means the University of Western Australia.
Workplace is any location where tasks or activities are carried for or on behalf of the University; and
