University Policy on: Clinical and Dental Loadings

Purpose of the policy and summary of issues it addresses:

This policy details the nature and purpose of Clinical and Dental Loadings and explains the eligibility criteria and procedure for payment.

Policy statement:

1 Clinical Loadings

1.1 Clinical Loadings are paid to certain medical and dental academic staff in recognition of their particular responsibility for patient care and the need to retain some parity between the University academic clinician and the hospital specialist who performs like duties and has similar responsibilities.

1.2 Clinical Academics are appointed under the conditions of the UWA Academic Staff Agreement 2010, however the entitlement to Clinical Loadings is provided for by the Higher Education Academic Salaries Award 2002 (see Schedule A, clause A.3.2).

1.3 The current rates for each loading can be found at Current Academic Allowances / Loadings in the UWA Salary Scales website.

1.4 Clinical loadings are superannuable and paid to eligible staff during annual, personal, long service leave and during sabbatical

2 Full Clinical Loadings

2.1 To receive a Clinical Loading the staff member must meet the following criteria:

  • Medically qualified and employed as a Winthrop Professor, Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor (that is, in a teaching and research position)
  • Registered to work in Australia
  • Have patient care responsibilities
  • Employed in a full clinical school of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The following Schools qualify as full clinical schools:
  • Medicine and Pharmacology
  • Surgery
  • Women's and Infants' Health
  • Paediatrics and Child Health
  • Primary, Aboriginal and Rural Health Care
  • Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences
  • Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

3 Pre-Clinical Loading

3.1 The criteria for receiving a Pre-Clinical Loading are the same as a Full Clinical Loading except:

  • They do not need to be eligible for registration in Australia.
  • They are not responsible for patient care

3.2 This loading applies to clinical academics in the School of Population Health.

4 Dental Clinical Loading

4.1 To receive a Dental Clinical Loading, the staff member must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Dentist qualification registrable with the Dental Board of Western Australia.
  • Be employed as a Winthrop Professor, Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor to teach students in a Medical or Dental School at the University of Western Australia.

Note: The descriptions of staff eligible to claim clinical loadings contained in the clauses above should not be regarded as definitive. Any new claim for payment of a clinical loading should be referred to the Deputy Director, Human Resources.

Procedure

Schools must indicate if any clinical loadings are payable on the Funding Arrangements for Clinical Academic Appointee form at the time of appointment

Full Clinical loadings should be processed in Alesco using code X020A of the Current Academic Allowances / Loadings in the UWA Salary Scales.

Pre-clinical loadings should be processed in Alesco using code X040A of the Current Academic Allowances / Loadings in the UWA Salary Scales.

Dental Clinical Loadings should be processed in accordance with code X040B of the Current Academic Allowances / Loadings in the UWA Salary Scales.
