University Policy on: Distinction Allowance (Academic Staff)

Purpose of the policy and summary of issues it addresses:

This policy defines the nature and purpose of the Distinction Allowance and details the eligibility criteria and procedures to apply for the allowance.

Policy statement:

1.1 A Distinction allowance is a fixed sum payment to members of Australian Academies as a means of recognising their exceptional performance. These Academies include:

  • The Academy of Humanities,
  • The Academy of Social Sciences,
  • The Academy of Science and
  • The Academy of Technological Science and Engineering

1.2 Distinction allowances are paid to a maximum of $10,000 per annum. This may be paid as a single annual amount or fortnightly in their salary. The allowance does not attract Superannuation. Alternatively, the employee may choose to have the payment made to a School Research Account.

1.3 If the allowance is paid into a School Research Account, it is recommended that a written agreement be made between the employee and the Head of School specifying what the money is to be used for.

1.4 A Distinction allowance will be paid whilst the employee continues to be recognised by an Academy and remains a paid employee of the University.

1.5 It is the responsibility of the employee to advise the Dean of any change to his or her status as a member of an Academy.

Procedure

Applications must be made in writing for the approval of the relevant Dean who must identify the source of funding.

Once approved, the application is sent to Human Resources M350 for processing and payment. However, if the payment is being made to a School Research Account the paperwork is to be sent to Financial Services M449.
